NOW affirms that reproductive rights are issues of life and death for women, not mere matters of choice. NOW fully supports access to safe and legal abortion, to effective birth control and emergency contraception, to reproductive health services and education for ALL women. We oppose attempts to restrict these rights through legislation, regulation or Constitutional amendment.
Clinic violence has dramatically increased since the 2008 elections. Religious right activists who felt empowered under the Bush Administration are now pushing back against what they see as a hostile White House and Congress. We must not allow these bullies to prevail!
As Congress continues to revisit health care reform, access to basic contraception, as well as safe and legal abortion, is under attack. While there have been several wins in health care reform legislation concerning reproductive health services, a number of serious threats have emerged. Abortion rights opponents in both parties are moving to prohibit coverage in any public plan that is part of reform legislation. There is even an effort to prohibit private health insurance companies participating in the proposed health insurance exchanges to stop covering abortion services. The Catholic Bishops are leading the charge, despite lack of support from their own parishioners. (Studies indicate that 95% of Catholics use birth control at some time in their lives. Most private insurers currently provide coverage for abortion, but legislation has been proposed which will eliminate this as an option for plans receiving any federal funding for insuring low-income or other uninsured Americans. Of course, insurers should be willing to provide contraceptive services, as cheaper than paying for abortions or childbirth. But the rabid Religious Right is not always logical when it comes to potential cost savings.
Anti-choice groups continue to flood members of Congress with calls opposing any provision that would permit the use of government funds to pay for abortion care and contraception, as well as trying to stop private insurance coverage of these services. Please call or email your representative and senators. They need to hear that their constituents support reproductive choice. Click here for additional information from NOW.
